Model-based techniques are a more sophisticated method of estimating the scatter contribution. Scatter correction is achieved by integrating the scatter estimate into the reconstruction algorithm. Model-based techniques theoretically provide better compensation, they are now finding more widespread application in the clinical environment.

12.3.3 Resolution Recovery

The spatial resolution of the camera degrades with distance from the collimator. Resolution recovery compensates for this effect and makes better use of the available projection data, allowing better images to be reconstructed from noisier data. This translates into shorter scan acquisition times or lower amounts of activity injected into the patient without loss of image quality. Most camera manufacturers now provide implementations of the OSEM algorithm that integrate resolution recovery into the reconstruction algorithm.
